I use WMC in Windows 7 to host all media (photos, music/mp3, downloaded movies and TV) as well as record digital (HD)TV programming over DVB-C using an anysee tuner E30TCPlus. I want to access all this content, incl live TV from the main WMC, on other TVs in my house and am looking to options. I can buy a windows media extender, but then problems like subtitles (I download .srt files for tv shows and movies I download and then ffdshow displays them when playing the media), video formats, lack of internet browsing access, etc might annoy me. Are there also software alternatives I could run on a cheap PC to match up well with my WMC source? Maybe some other embedded devices?

I know answers here should here should be cut and dry but there really isn't enough information in the question? Do you want to watch live tv? What kind of tuners do you have. Extenders are good because of simplicity to set up and they work most of the time. Live and recorded TV is made simpler because there is just one main source. For alternatives, you can run Media Center on another pc and share (unprotected) recorded tv and media folders. With networked tuners you could have live tv on every pc. If your not looking for live tv you can use Boxee, XBMC and a lot of other programs on a SFF PC. If you live alone and will only watch one TV at a time, an HDMI splitter may work. Personally I like extenders. Movie formats are not an issue if you plan for compatibility from the start. All my movies are stored in dvr-ms. |
